The history of mathematics teaching in Southwest Jiaotong University began in 1896, which is synchronous with the construction and development history of the University. The predecessor of the school of mathematics is the Department of mathematics and mechanics of Tangshan railway University, which was founded in 1958. In 1982, our school was the first batch of national engineering colleges to obtain the right to grant master's degree in pure mathematics. In 1985, the university officially established the Department of mathematics, and in 2008, the university officially established the school of mathematics.
The school has 136 faculty members (including 17 in Emei campus), including 104 full-time teachers, 58 professors and associate professors in Chengdu campus, 1 academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences (double employed), 1 national special expert, 1 young and middle-aged expert with outstanding contribution to the country, 1 young and middle-aged expert with outstanding contribution, 4 experts of the provincial "thousand talents plan", 1 academic and technical leader of the province, 2 "outstanding youth fund" winners, and 11 backup candidates for Provincial academic and technical leader. At present, the school has one key discipline in Sichuan Province: applied mathematics; one first-class discipline doctoral program: mathematics; two first-class discipline master programs: Mathematics and statistics; and three undergraduate majors: Pure and applied mathematics, statistics, data science and big data technology.
